One of the very pleasant surprises of this year’s E3 conference was definitely the upcoming Blair Witch, which took less than two months, and immediately at this year’s Gamescom we had the opportunity to try the game first hand and to interview the developers. week even goes out. The big peculiarity of the game was the cooperation with the faithful partner Bullet, the dog of the main character. Terka: It’s not just about communication, you also have to cooperate, you have to use the skills of your companion to advance the game. In our case we have a dog, where we can use abilities such as sniffing, hitchhiking, the possibility of digging various things or also perceives much more carefully danger. Still it is only a dog, unable to solve puzzles, so it’s really about diverse skills and the ability to cooperate. If you have ever watched the mystery of Blair Witch, you will certainly remember the peculiarity of this film, namely that it was filmed on a personal home camera, precisely for this reason, the handheld camera somehow had to be implemented in the game. Terka: We were wondering how we really want to do it, because yes, of course, the easiest way would be to make the main character look for the camera but we were not happy with that. Therefore, we decided to use the camera directly in solving puzzles in our game. The camera sometimes shows things that do not exist in the real world, although they can influence it in some way. As an example, what happens on the cartridges you find on your way will also happen in the real world. But you can manipulate the cartridges, which will also affect your surroundings. And how do you do it? It’s up to you By playing, we can confirm that playing with, the camera works well and finding cassettes important for advancement is a nice addition to gameplay. The whole mysterious atmosphere, which we could have sucked mainly in the opening forest sequence, where something sinister haunted us, is also perfect. Terka: We believe Blair Witch is not an independent being, it is not something you can fight or something you can encounter. We believe that it is such a powerful force that one day rules the forest and distorts your own reality. You will try to break you and fight you, but not through direct combat. In horror games, it’s always about trying new things and improvising, because the trick that once worked will not work the second time, you can’t create another Slenderman, that wouldn’t work, so you have to constantly improvise and add a new element. In our game are for example just puzzly, dog Bullet and exactly such monsters. It is the connection of Bullet and monsters is very important in this, because the dog can help you in important situations, can detect dark creatures and directs us in the right direction, so that we can resist the monster attack. But good work must be followed by reward! Terka: Yes, you can cuddle with a dog, this is the most important feature that also really influences the game. The game really changes based on your behavior and progress, but let’s not forget, it’s not so easy that if you keep on cuddling with your doggie, it will have a significant impact on the game and automatically come to a good end. But I think it’s important only because if you couldn’t do that, you would know there was something missing about it all, because it was otherwise something so natural, such a self-evident interaction that it would be really strange to prohibit it. The dog companion is really used to playing and I have to personally confirm that as soon as I entered the house and Bullet was not with me, I was nervous about it. Its design thus seems almost real. Terka: We really have a dog in our office. She is a bitch of one of our sound designers and yes, she was used for motion capture and all the relevant sounds, so all such sounds are 100% authentic. Now, however, the question of whether we can trust the developer, because she admitted that she is more of a cat than a dog, but probably yes, gossiping us certainly authentic. Blair Witch is certainly an interesting title that we recommend to explore, especially when it is released this week.
